Biography Information


Edward Macaulay was educated at St. Michael’s University School in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. Edward obtained his B.A. from the University of Victoria were he completed his B.A in history and political science. He went on to graduate with a law degree from Queen’s University, Belfast, N.I. and a second law degree from the University of Victoria. 

 

Edward was called to the Bar of British Columbia in May 1991 and continued to work until 1998 as an Associate for Macaulay McColl, Barristers in Vancouver, were he had articled. He was an Associate for the law firm of Connell Lightbody before opening his own law practice in Vancouver in 2000, concentrating on all aspects of Estate litigation and Adult Guardianship issues.

 

Edward’s practice involves Wills, Estates and Trust Litigation, including interpretation of wills, probate actions, the Wills Variation Act and testamentary capacity. In addition Edward has experience dealing with challenges to executor and trustee accounts as well as probate and administration matters.

 

Edward has represented many clients in Adult Guardianship and Committee applications under the Patients Property Act, (both contested and un–contested applications). He was involved in the first hearing under the Adult Guardianship Act, Abuse and Neglect provisions.

 

Although his practice centres primarily on estate and trust issues, Edward has experience in foreclosure matters and reviewing of solicitors’ accounts.

 

Edward has experience in the Provincial, the Supreme Court and the Court of Appeal of British Columbia.

 

Edward is current Chair of the Elder Law subsection of the Canadian Bar Association (CBA) of BC and was previously the Vice-Chair;

 

Past member of the Board of Directors of the German Canadian Benevolent Society of BC;

 

Member since 2004 and current President of the Board of Directors of Community Legal Assistance Society;

 

Past-Chair 2000-2001, of the CBA Wills, Estates and Trust subsection, Vancouver, BC and was previously Vice-Chair, Treasurer and Secretary;

 

Elected member of the BC CBA Provincial Council for the County of Vancouver;

 

Chair, 1998-2001, of the BC CBA Communications Committee;

 

Member 2001-2002, of the CBA National Communication Committee;

 

Member of the CBA sub-committee on Adult Guardianship legislation;

 

Member of the CBA sub-committee on Testamentary Custody and Guardianship;

 

Chair BC CBA Wills, Estates and Trust subsection, sub-committee to review proposed Family Status Recognition Act;

 

Member of the Representation Agreement Task Group, Legislative sub-committee;

 

Past member of the Salvation Army Pro Bono Lawyer Consultant Programme, (media sub-committee).
